Starting a garden is very easy and I will show you the simple ways to get started. You will need a few tools to get the garden started. You will need to use your hands and you may get a little dirty but you will enjoy every minute of it. I hope you enjoy gardening as much as I do. We will go over a few basic things and before you know it you will have a nice looking garden spot.

Here is the list of things to do:

1. Find a spot in the yard or patio where you want to start a garden.

a. If you are wanting a vegetable garden then you must find a spot that gets full sun most of the day. You need to have at least 8 hours of sun.

b. If you want a flower garden then you may want a little more shade. Of course this will depend on what type of flowers you want. Some flowers require lots of full sun others prefer partial shade and still others prefer mostly shade.

2. Once you have decided on what you want to grow you will then need to break the ground. I mean you will need dig a spot to plant your garden favorites.

a. It is best if you have a tiller to break the ground and work the soil until you can freely move the soil around by hand or rake. You also may want to have what we call a raised bed garden. In a raised bed garden you will want to make a rectangular box out of wood. The box can be what ever size you want or have room for. It does not have to be made out of wood but that is cheaper than using stone or brick.

b. If using a raised bed you will want to add dirt to the top of the box. The depth of a vegetable garden needs at least 6 to 8 inches. A good idea would be to loosen the soil under the bed to allow good root growth. One of the advantages of using a raised bed for gardening is that it will drain better, the raised bed soil will warm up fast than plant directly in the ground. The biggest advantage of a raised bed garden is that you control the type of soil you need for your plants.

You can use organic soil mixed with your own ground soil if you want.

If you are planting directly in the ground soil make sure you have a level spot and some room to grow a garden. Make sure the soil is worked up down to a depth of at least 8 inches. You may want to test your soil to see if the soil needs any fertilizer or organic matter mixed in with the soil. You can buy a soil test kit at most garden dealers.

3. Once you have the soil the way you want you can start planting your vegetables or flowers or shrubs etc.. Give at least one square for each of your garden vegetables. Of course if planting things such as carrots and radishes or green beans to name a few you will want to plant these in rows.

Flowers will need at least one square foot to have room to grow all summer and into fall. Flowers will need a somewhat different soil than the vegetables will but if you can keep a more neutral PH in the soil you will be able to grow most things without any problems. A good PH is around 6.2 to 7.00 for a lot of flower and vegetables. For a beginning gardener shoot for PH of around 6.5.

There are some plants that like a little acidic soil and some a little less.

4. After planting your garden please keep the garden watered on a regular basis not over water but also do not put on to little either. A good watering a couple times a week is sufficient for the vegetable garden. depending on the the type of flowers you plant you may want to water every 2 or 3 days.

5. Keep the weeds to a minimum.

6. Watch the garden grow and reap the rewards of eating home grown vegetables or watching your flowers bloom into something beautiful.
